An open letter to
bird-watchers, dog-walkers, beach go-ers, child minders, joggers, picnickers,
roller bladers, romantic strollers and all other Friends:
My husband and I live
near the park and are daily users of it. We've participated in several
'park clean up' events, and every day, we do our best to remove as much litter
as we can from the park. It can be so disheartening to see our beautiful
park slowly turning into a rubbish dump. BUT YOU CAN HELP! Hundreds
of us pass through the park everyday.
Please join us in protecting the
park by picking up and depositing in the litter/recycling cans at least 2
pieces of trash each time you use the park. Not only will you be doing
your part to protect the wildlife and keep the area beautiful, you'll be
setting a great example to those folks new to the park. If they see you
stepping over trash instead of picking it up, they may think leaving garbage
behind is acceptable. If they see you picking up litter and putting it
away, they'll know that this is a place people care about, and perhaps they'll
care too.
If you bring it in, take
it out. If you drop it, pick it up. If each of us can leave with
one or two pieces of trash put away properly in the bins, the park will be
better everyday!
With much appreciation,
your fellow park-lover
Deanne Wright

It would be great to get a conversation going regarding the amount of garbage in the park these days. I usually do a daily walk through all three beaches starting from the 13th St. entrance and pick up what I can. There are fresh cups/bottles/trash each day. Monday mornings are particularly bad after all the parties, bbq's etc. The worst of those beaches is the largest one just east of the "Whimbrel Point". While garbage cans are never too far away @ the park, I believe this particular beach could use a set of cans somewhere near one of the benches. I understand you cannot force anyone to clean up after themselves but maybe more people would be inclined to if there were garbage cans in plain sight. Thoughts anyone...?
