GOOD FACEBOOK GROUP TO FOLLOW - "TORONTO BIRDING"

If you are a birder and Facebook user, Toronto Birding is a good group to follow. Many of their posts are about Sam Smith Park or Humber Bay.  Here is a recent post plus photograph from Nancy Barrett ....

"A couple of us watched in awe as this beautiful girl suddenly made a move for an unfortunate young male merganser that made the mistake of landing on the ice in the owl's back yard. We thought we were about to witness a kill, but she had blood on her talons, possibly from an earlier meal, and couldn't really be bothered, overshooting and landing on the ice. I've never seen a duck try to move so fast on ice in my life!

VIDEO MADE BY THE ONTARIO YOUTH COUNCIL ABOUT PROTECTING POLLINATORS

The importance of protecting and increasing pollinator habitat is especially relevant for Sam Smith Park. FOSS continues to urge the park's maintenance staff to reduce the amount of mowing done in grassed areas. Members also planted milkweed seeds last fall in some of the meadows. Hopefully, the park's monarch butterflies will see results this spring.

FOLLOW UP TO "SPROUT" GREEN COMMUNITY CONVERSATION

On February 17, more than 60 members the Etobicoke South community joined a conversation to generate ideas for projects to green the community.  This was organized by the City's Live Green team.  Lots of great, green ideas were shared and new partnerships were formed.
