Have you seen any of the following birds in the park, particularly in the area adjacent to the Power House?
Acadian Flycatcher, Henslow's Sparrow, Kirtland's Warbler, Olive-sided Flycatcher, Common Nighthawk, Canada Warbler (pictured above), Golden-winged Warbler, Hooded Warbler, Yellow-breasted Chat, Cerulean Warbler, Louisiana Waterthrush.
These birds are listed on the Canadian Government's Endangered Wildlife list as "endangered, threatened or of concern". In our efforts to have Sam Smith Park seen as an important habitat and refuge for birds in decline, it is important that we record sightings. Common Nighthawks are summer (breeding?) residents in the area, but have been noticeably less common the past few years. I suspect they nest on one or more of the flat roofs in the area: Power House, Filtration Plant, Humber College, Lakeshore Lodge. If so, they may have been spooked by the construction of the school and the renovations at the filtration plant over the last couple of years. It will be interesting to see if they are back in their former numbers this year.
I have definitely seen Hooded Warbler in the area of the Power House in migration. I have probably seen Canada Warbler there too, but being more common, they're also less memorable.
I recall Acadian Flycatcher being reported on Ontbirds there a few years ago (before the school was built).
