DISHEARTENING VANDALISM OF TREE SWALLOW NESTING BOXES

How sickeningly paradoxical - four nesting boxes were broken in to not many hours after our Spring Bird Festival, an event during which we celebrate bird life in the park.  Four unfortunate swallow pairs will not be rearing young in the park this year.

To date, there has been little nesting box vandalism.  Let's hope that this does not become a regular problem.

FOSS volunteers will remove the boxes and they will be repaired and ready to go for next year's arrivals. (Note: temporary "fixes" with duct tape were applied this morning.  To minimize disturbance, this was done very quickly.  It is uncertain whether there are eggs or hatch-lings in the boxes or whether the swallows will return.)

To report wildlife harassment in the park there are a number of options but getting an immediate response is not easy.

Toronto Animal Services has an emergency response team (416 338 7297) and to contact the city's bylaw enforcement unit you need to call 311.  There is always the police (22 Division, the closest, 416 808 2200 or the general number for Toronto, 416 808 2222).
